-1. Those participating in Shinpan seminar will break into 5 Groups. -2. Each Group will rotate to the indicated position based on times, 35 minutes in each position, 5 minutes to rotate to next position. -3. All Shinpan Seminar participants will participate in Shiai. -4. Matches will be 2 minutes with rotation every 2 matches; all those in group will continue to rotate in to Shinpan until time to rotate to next position. -5. Hantei will be called if tied after 2 minutes. -6. One Senior member (5th Dan or above) will be assigned to a group to advise group. -7. Other Senior members will be assigned to Courts and advise Shinpan on Court. -8. Those not participating as Shinpan will have Shiai on Court B. -9. While in Position C and E, Senior member should review Shinpan performance, flag handling, Shinpan positioning, any other questions. -10. PNKF Dojo need to encourage their members to participate in Other Shiai matches. PASSAGE
One of the principal figures in the post-War resurgence of American Kendo passed
away peacefully in Honolulu on September 16. Kendo Kyoshi 7th Dan Shigeo Yoshinaga was
born amidst the pineapple fields of Wahiawa almost 96 years earlier on September 26,
1917. At the age of four, he was sent kibei to live with his grandparents in Kumamoto,
where he began Kendo during his first year of intermediate school. Returning to Hawaii
in 1937 at age 19, he began teaching Kendo, and he also taught Japanese at Waialae
Japanese language school. Immediately following World War Two he became active in the
legendary sensei Shuji Mikami’s Shiseikan Dojo in Kapahulu. He developed a business of
taking groups on tours of Japan twice a year, and used these trips as opportunities to
do Kendo. After each tour concluded he remained in Japan for several months practicing,
including attending the annual Kyoto Taikai. Another connection he cultivated with Japan
was arranging practices between local kenshi and members of the Japan Self Defense
Forces and Merchant Marines when their ships would put in to port. After his marriage he
did not travel to Japan as often, but developed a construction company and built homes.
Yoshinaga Sensei started a Dojo at Kotohira Jinja, then moved it to the Young Buddhist
Association, and finally to Kenshikan Dojo at the new Japanese Cultural Center. His Dojo
is noted for his special emphasis on encouraging children’s Kendo development. Yoshinaga
Sensei was President of the Hawaii Kendo Federation, and was a shinpan at the 1WKC in
Sapporo. Fifth Dan in Kyudo, he was also President of the Hawaii Kyudokai. In 1994 the
Emperor bestowed upon him the Fifth Order of the Sacred Treasure. His funeral was on
Sunday, September 29. We extend our sincere condolences to his wife Keiko, son Dwight,
daughters Iris Ito and Jill Inoshita, and seven grandchildren.
